Restored 100-year-old thatched folk house with rich narrative charm—ideal main lodging, now accessible via FUUUN to overcome transport challenges.

Tochigi House

This beautifully restored thatched-roof kominka is over 100 years old and steeped in traditional charm. Formerly operated as a high-end kaiseki restaurant, the main house (母屋) blends historical architecture with functional elegance. It was also the centrepiece of Japan’s first kominka glamping experience, attracting both local and international guests. Thoughtfully maintained and upgraded, the structure is in excellent condition and immediately operable as a hospitality or retreat space. The ambiance speaks of heritage, serenity, and story-rich potential—ideal for anyone looking to carry on the legacy or explore new uses.

Area

The expansive grounds span approximately 1,000 tsubo (around 3,300 square meters), meticulously developed at a cost exceeding ÂĄ100 million. The site includes a landscaped garden area designed for tent accommodation, making it perfectly suited for glamping or outdoor events. Surrounded by lush nature and neighbouring vacant houses, the location offers unique potential for future expansion or community revitalisation. While public transportation is limited, most guests arrive by car, making it a self-sufficient, destination-style setting ideal for creative, private, or commercial ventures.
