Originally acquired in 2019 as a personal surf retreat and guesthouse, this traditional home in the preserved district of Mimitsu has been sensitively renovated to balance charm with modern function. The exterior was restored in accordance with the City of Hyuga’s preservation standards, including repainting, gutter replacement, and façade repair to maintain its historic character. Inside, renovations include converting the tatami room into a dirt-floor (doma) space, creating a practical flow from entrance through to the kitchen and rear exit—allowing indoor access in shoes. Key updates include new doors for the bathroom and toilet, air conditioning installation, and a modern washlet toilet. The first-floor corridor and second-floor room are currently used for storage. A broad, sunlit garden provides ideal conditions for drying laundry or futons. Added outdoor outlets enhance convenience, and a covered rear space serves well for carpentry or hobby work, with sheltered access to the storage shed. The home is functional, charming, and well-suited for surf-centered living, though its thermal insulation may be less robust than contemporary builds.
