83 Izumi, Atami, Shizuoka

Situated on the border of Yugawara, Kanagawa and Atami, Shizuoka, EXP. Co-Onsen is a project that embodies EXP.’s mission: dissolving borders between people and places.

EXP._Co-Onsen

Before becoming EXP._Co-Onsen, the property belonged to political figure Shin Kanemaru—transforming it and its expansive garden meant carefully balancing preservation with quiet innovation. Chosen for its beautiful architecture and symbolic location between Atami and Yugawara, the site reflects the concept of “bridging”: Atami, birthplace of Sino-Japanese relations; Yugawara, retreat of literary giants. This theme extends to the garden, designed by celebrated landscaper Michio Tase, using the technique of 借景庭園 (shakkei teien)—‘borrowed landscape’—which incorporates the surrounding scenery into the composition. The untouched vegetation, influenced by the nearby Yukawa River, was preserved and enhanced, creating a space rich in regional character and biodiversity. Come spring, ume, sakura, rhododendron, and wildflowers bloom in harmony; taking the location from lush greenery, to colorful, and floral experience.

Area

The Atami countryside, nestled in the mountainous region of Shizuoka Prefecture, offers a peaceful retreat with lush forests, terraced farms, and winding rural roads. Traditional Japanese homes and quiet hot spring inns dot the landscape, blending harmoniously with the area's natural beauty. With its mild climate and scenic views of the ocean and hills, the Atami countryside is a serene contrast to the bustling city centre.
