Modernist Hilltop Teahouse with Gorgeous Mt. Fuji Views in Fujinomiya

EXP._Teahouse

Set at the south-western edge of Fujinomiya city, this teahouse is built into the bank of a hillside. With the building rising above surrounding neighbours, it has an unadulterated direct line of sight to Mt. Fuji. Commissioned in post-war 1960s Japan by an industrialist in the car industry, the structure was designed by a Tokyo architect as a modernist residence. A bold concrete shell wraps around warm tatami rooms, which serve as alcoves for entertainment, marrying modern architecture with classic Japanese design principles. Inside this contemporary wrapper lies a traditional tearoom, expressed architecturally to create a striking contrast between old and new. The building also features a large reception area, suitable for hosting groups and lounging. Traditionally the space would have been used as a tearoom, and EXP. modernizes that. A building with a story, it remains a unique blend of eras and sensibilities.

Area

A truly hidden gem, the teahouse is located in the Nonaka area of Fujinomiya city. Backing up onto the hillside and forest, it has the best singular view of Fuji in Fujinomiya. It is a 6-minute drive away from the closest station, and for guests who are golf enthusiasts, Nonaka is also the location of Fujinomiya Golf Club, also famous for its view of the eponymous mountain.
